Our Reservationist can book both Lunch & Dinner up to 18 months in advance. We had to order the famous polynesian black pearl. His stunning dessert was a chocolate mouse with a lilikoi center, draped in chocolate ganache. It was served with toasted coconut, whipped cream, and in a delicate pastry seashell. I loved the lilikoi purée beneath the shell, which gave a perfect tartness to cut through the rich, chocolatey sweetness.

You won’t regret the food, even if your wallet might. While there isn’t a formal dress code, I’d think twice about strolling in while wearing just a bikini or sans shoes. During my last visit, I ordered the sesame-rice crusted Hawaiian Kanpachi, which was caught off the coast of Kailua Kona. The serving was approximately the size of my hand. It arrived with a side of vegetables and Kalua pig fried rice.
This is one of the toughest reservations to get anywhere in Hawaii, and most people consider it the best food in Hawaii too. When I lived on Maui, I went to Mama’s Fish House a handful of times. I’ll share a little about my food today, but you can find reviews for the restaurant far and wide. I mostly wanted to talk about what to expect when you dine here. You may have better luck making a reservation for lunch instead of dinner. I’ve been to Mama’s for lunch, and I found that the food and service were both fantastic.
To that end we have engaged the services of professionals to assist and advise us in these matters. Mama’s Fish House does have one beef option for meat-eaters who aren’t into seafood. They also can easily alter certain menu items for vegetarian or vegan diets. You can also ask your server for gluten-free options and accommodations, though they are sometimes a bit limited. One time, I went at dinnertime and chose two appetizers instead of an entree, just because they both sounded better at the time than the main entree options. On other trips, I’ve gotten different seafood options and they were all fine.
Fresh, Local, Maui
Before you even visit Maui, you want to secure your reservations to Mama’s Fish House, especially if you dream of an oceanview seat at sunset. For these most coveted spots, you’ll want to make your reservation 4-6 months in advance. You can get locally caught fresh fish at lots of other restaurants on the island — and without the premium. It’s true that fresh, tasty seafood can be found at many restaurants on Maui — Paia Fish Market and Mala Ocean Tavern both come to mind. But I still maintain that a visit to Mama’s is a worthwhile experience to try at least once — if it isn’t outside of your budget.

You don’t have to dine at Mama’s Fish House to enjoy the cove. All beaches in Hawaii are public so go visit this perfect beach and cove even if you decide not to dine there. Some people do feel uncomfortable being in their shorts or bikini with restaurant guests wearing their finest aloha clothing though. Because the restaurant tends to be booked months in advance, we highly recommend booking early as you plan for your special day.
In my experience, the hosts and serving staff are always phenomenal. They’ll share a welcome, a rundown of what to expect during your meal, explain any specials, and give you space to decide what you want. Even if you’re early, you’ll want to go straight to check in and let them know you’re there. From there, you’ll be free to wander around the lawn and beach.

But if you are looking for pictures to capture the experience or a special occasion, the lighting is better at lunch. After lunch, visit Kaulahao Beach (4-minutes south of Mama’s to view the sleeping sea turtles on the beach and then walk off lunch in Paia before you head home. The drive after lunch, with the views, is a much more enjoyable experience. Mama’s is located on the north shore of Maui, 1.4-miles past Paia town on the Road to Hana.
